Watering Los Angeles

the aqueduct
irrigates change
half a thousand
miles away
as it steals waters
of northern deserts,
abandoning lakes
of ancient origin
and wetlands
of traditional
flyways, thirsting
for fresh inlets,
with no option
but death.

Published Halcyon, 1999

Painting inspired by the tufa at Mono Lake
