Rush for
enlightenment --
pass from Rome to Durer
in less than three hours.
There are no places for leisurely contemplation.
Move -- herd
until overloaded senses scream relief.
The Cafeteria --
it doesn't serve coffee,
only espresso at a fake marble bar
midway between
Egyptian funerary practices
and the European Sculpture Court.
On, on to modern art --
push, elbow to culture.
The occasional student must vie
with the masses.
Cartier and Byzantium
never had so many visitors
in a single day.
If Constantine had foreseen
the Orthodox priest
shoving with the masses
to purchase a cheap replica cross
he might never have founded the city. |
